Infill House : studioMAS

The horizontal wooden slats let light into the stairway from the windows beyond. Really there is no reason to use electricity to light this stairway during the daytime either. The wood can be used as a handrail as well. It also gives the sense of transparency, which I love! It’s “green” and multifunctional. This would not be considered ADA friendly, but for a private family residence, it doesn’t have to be.

Another example of a non ADA stairway would be this here:

House Bierings : Rocha Tombal Architecten

Not only is it not ADA accessible, but I would venture a guess it may not make you feel comfortable. This is a good thing! 1. It’s not your house. 2. It’s getting a sense of fear out of you. 3. You may have hatred towards it because of the way it juts out into the space. Just like the last example the wall is multifunctional. It’s a wall for the house, and once you have passed the bottom stairs you pass into a “relief zone” of something around you to give you some sort of security.

Space: Not In An Outer Sense

Lesson:

Spaces are unique. To manipulate space is not difficult. Anyone can do it, but to do it in an interesting way to get some sort of emotional, mental, or even physical response out of someone is a technique that must be worked on to master. Be observant.

You must learn how to do this not by putting up four walls with curtains on the windows for an interior space. A space can be warm in a physical sense, or warm in the sense that it is cold in the space, but the colors in the space make the space “feel” warm. A welcome feeling, to most. Understand people’s senses.

These feelings can influenced with by using different textures, materials, colors, light/dark etc. Possibly even by using a combination of all these different techniques.

How does this space make you feel?

The top image makes you almost think, is there a roof on that structure??

(Zollverein School of Management & Design, Essen, Germany)

The second image; does this look like an inviting space? Since this space is already furnished does this make it more, or less, appealing? Imagine the space without the furniture. How does it feel then?
